Hyundai i80 Concept by Merk AJ! What Can You Say?

By ReviewHyundai Staff — July 22, 2013

American automotive designer A.J. Merk from Cleveland, Ohio has unveiled a stunning fan concept for a Hyundai ‘halo’ sports car — the i80 Gran Tourer — and it is making the automotive world ask a very exciting question: could Hyundai really build something like this?

In Hyundai’s own words: “Through technology and design, man’s dream car and nature’s dream car become one.” The concept car by Merk AJ traces the road that Hyundai could take if it dared to place a world-class grand touring coupe at the very top of its range.

The Concept — A Hyundai ‘Halo’ GT

A.J. Merk, a proponent of bold, future-forward Korean car design, has created a new concept for a “halo” sports car named the Hyundai i80 GT Sports Coupe, borrowing Hyundai’s established European nomenclature (i10, i20, i30, i40 — why not i80?).

It is important to note that Merk did not create his sketches at the request of Hyundai Motor Company. This is a purely independent design exercise — yet it has generated significant attention from both automotive media and design professionals worldwide, because it answers a question many enthusiasts have been asking: what would Hyundai look like if it truly went for it at the top of the market?

Where Would it Sit in the Range?

The i80 is envisioned as a luxury Grand Tourer that would sit decisively above the Genesis Coupe in Hyundai’s range — moving the brand into territory currently occupied by the Audi A5/S5, BMW 6 Series Coupe, Maserati GranTurismo and Mercedes-Benz CL.

The concept references these great European coupes both visually and philosophically. Long bonnet, short overhangs, a low and wide stance, a fastback roofline and dramatic proportions all signal that the i80 is not merely a restyled Genesis Coupe. This is a different class of vehicle entirely.

Powertrain Vision

Under the bonnet of Merk’s i80 concept, the designer envisions Hyundai’s acclaimed Tau V8 5.0-litre engine — the same unit that powers the Genesis 5.0 R-Spec and the Equus limousine. With appropriate tuning, this naturally aspirated V8 could produce well over 400HP in the i80 application, delivering the performance character that a true GT demands.

Alternatively, a V6 T-GDi twin-turbocharged option is also proposed, offering more accessible performance with exceptional efficiency — potentially competing with the output figures of a BMW M3 while returning fuel economy more in line with a family saloon.

What Can You Say?

Hyundai’s Fluidic Sculpture design language provides the perfect foundation for an i80 GT

The i80 concept demonstrates just how far Hyundai’s design language has come — and how far it could still go. The Fluidic Sculpture philosophy, with its flowing organic lines and dynamic tension, is perfectly suited to the grand tourer form. The concept proves that the visual vocabulary is already there.

Whether Hyundai will ever build such a vehicle remains to be seen. But with a new design president in Peter Schreyer, a growing global reputation for quality and innovation, and an increasingly premium customer base, the i80 is far more than a fantasy — it is a vision of where the brand could go.

Check the pictures and tell us what you think — could the Hyundai i80 GT be the car that finally takes the brand to the very top of the automotive world?
