Hyundai Motor Company has nearly completed a landmark expansion of its Turkey plant — a USD 609 million investment that will double capacity, add the new i10 to the production line, and create thousands of new jobs.
Hyundai Assan Otomotiv Sanayi (HAOS), the South Korean automaker’s Turkish manufacturing joint venture, is in the final stages of a major expansion that will transform the Îzmit facility into a key small car production base for all of Europe.
Construction continues at full speed, one year after the USD 609 million expansion announcement was made. The press, body and trim shops will soon be completed. Production of the new i10 has been moved forward to the end of September 2013 for both European and Turkish markets.
A Milestone Year for HAOS
HAOS President and CEO Won-Shin Chang commented on the significance of the expansion:
Official Statement
Won-Shin Chang — HAOS President & CEO
“The year 2013 is set to mark an important milestone for HAOS. This year we will double our production capacity to more than 200,000 units with an investment that exceeds the total sum of all investments since the opening of the plant. We believe that this expansion will contribute greatly to Turkey’s economy with new jobs and exports.”
New Jobs & Economic Impact
The investment is set to create around 775 new jobs at HAOS directly, and a total of more than 2,800 new jobs when including positions at suppliers. About 1,000 people were recruited during the past year alone, and hiring will continue until the end of 2014.
When all expansion work is completed, total employment at HAOS and its suppliers will reach 6,300 workers — a significant contribution to the regional economy of the Îzmit area.
Small Car Hub for Europe
With production of the new i10 added to the ongoing i20 production (which began at HAOS in 2010), the plant will become Hyundai’s dedicated small car production base for Europe. Together with Hyundai Motor’s investment, new Korean supplier companies have also made investments in Turkey, bringing the total number of local suppliers to more than 30.
